Tips and Tricks

Sometimes some extra little tips on how to wear your sling can help. Below are some "tricks" that we used that helped us in getting used to wearing our CSRS. We hope that they will help you as well!

  • If you or your baby feel uncomfortable or feel awkward while using the sling, start moving!
  • Movement is the best thing for a baby when they are unhappy in or out of a sling. Moving will quickly get you and your baby used to using a sling and both will come to love using it.
  • Another thing to always keep in mind, is the position of your rings. This will greatly effect your comfort.
  • Always keep the rings at corsage level. If you notice the rings moving down when you tighten the rails, start out with the rings higher. Use our signature shoulder band as a guide. Start out with the shoulder band on top of your shoulder, when you tighten the tail, the rings will be pulled lower if you have a smaller baby. Heavier babies create a weight and usually keep the rings and sling in place.
  • When you tighten the tail or rails, don't pull down, as this pulls the entire carrier down, causing strain on your back. Pull the tail sideways, this always helps! It is BEST however, to always adjust the rails individually. This will give you the best fit and will cause the least amount of strain.
  • The tighter your sling, the more comfortable you will be, and the safer your baby is.
  • Always wear your baby high and tight. Generally, your baby should be at your navel height. You should never wear your baby below waist level.
  • Your baby's knees should always be higher than his bottom in the Tummy to Tummy and the Hip positions.
  • Having your baby's bottom higher than his knees is unsafe and is less comfortable for you.
  • Always keep the top rail at under arm level to prevent unnecessary back strain. If you do have back aches, and you think that it is sling related, try wearing the baby higher and tighter or try using another position.
  • Your baby can not fall out of the sling if it is used correctly. You will feel the tail of your sling becoming loose if it has begun to slip.
  • Your baby will let you know if the sling is uncomfortable for him and adjust if needed.
  • Always check your sling for rips or tears in the fabric, this is highly unlikely, but it is necessary that you check.
  • Please, always make sure your baby's airway is not blocked by fabric, clothing or your breast. His chin should always be up and his face clear. If you have a newborn and are concerned about his airway, use a receiving blanket or cloth diaper, rolled up to keep baby's face up and positioned well.

Nursing cover up

Nursing coverup

  • For nursing, keeping your baby out of the sun, keeping him extra warm or to protect him from the prying hands of strangers, just simply drape the tail of the sling over you and your baby when needed.
  • *Very Important* Please make sure that your baby has plenty of room to breathe!! You do not want fabric near his airway, make sure that his chin is up and not buried into his chest or your body. Please take extra precautions while your baby is in a sling, as you would while feeding!*

Wash and Wear

  • All slings in the Southern and Signature Collection may be hand washed or machine washed on cold in the gentle cycle and hung to dry, with the exception of our silk slings and these are to be gently spot cleaned with minimal rubbing of fabrics, or dry cleaned only.
  • Treat your sling like you would a nice piece of clothing.
  • Most slings are made with denim and so if washed on hot water; you do risk the chance of the fabric bleeding.
  • All fabrics have been pre-washed prior to sewing.
